Why do JPEG photographs / images on the Web look so bad in my AOL browser?

Why does the web sites' background image look poor in my AOL browser?

AOL has a setting that, by default, is installed to speed up graphics download at a significant loss in image quality. To view true-color JPEG images in their normal (best) quality, configure your AOL browser as shown in the following steps. Close this window to return to the previous window.

1. Access AOL's "Preferences" as shown below for AOL 4.0...

2. Select 'WWW' from the Preferences dialog box as shown below...

3. Un-check 'Use compressed graphics' on the 'Web Graphics' tab as shown below, then click 'Apply'...

4. Now switch to the 'General' tab to and press the 'Delete Files' button to delete your 'Temporary Internet Files'. If you don't do this, the AOL browser will continue to use the poor quality images it has saved in its web file cache.

5. Click 'OK' to confirm the deletion of your Temporary Internet Files.

6. Select the 'Refresh' button in the AOL browser to reload the web page with full graphic image quality, or exit and re-start AOL.

7. Close this window to return to the previous window.
